One of California’s Most Toxic Sites

The Boeing Company is one of the Santa Susana Field Lab’s “Responsible Parties” who must pay for the cleanup of their portion of the site, according to 2007 cleanup agreements with CalEPA, to be completed by 2017. The site remains contaminated today.

Over the years, Boeing has consistently and aggressively worked to reduce their costs for the cleanup, despite the known risks to public health and environment.

Boeing will being cleanup their portion of the cleanup in the Fall/Winter of 2026. However, independent studies show that Boeing’s manipulation of data will allow them to leave nearly all of their contamination behind, before turning into a public park.

Summary of Boeing’s Cost Reduction Strategies

• 2007: The Order on Consent Cleanup Agreement between DTSC, Boeing, NASA, and DOE was to remediate the SSFL to match zoning set by Ventura County - including rural residential and agricultural scenarios. 

• In 2015, Boeing sent a letter to residents promising a Suburban Residential cleanup at the site. 

• In 2017, Boeing proposed a revised SRAM Rev3 that removed residential cleanup standards entirely.

• In 2022, DTSC and Boeing entered into a Settlement Agreement:

  • Introduces the 2022 SRAM which in turn weakens the Risk Based Screening Levels (RBSLs), dramatically weakening the Residential with Garden scenario.

  • Introduces a 5x and 100x multiplier. 

  • Proposes biological and cultural exemptions. 

  • Removes the background cleanup scenario entirely

• 2025, Boeing’s CMS Report:

  • Implements the 2022 SRAM which in turn weakens the Risk Based Screening Levels (RBSLs), dramatically weakening the Residential with Garden scenario to resemble a Recreational cleanup Scenario.

  • Implements the 5x and 100x multiplier - arbitrary increases to allow more contamination to remain despite increased health risks.

  • Implements biological exemptions - ignores a report by the US Fish and Wildlife Agency that recommended a complete cleanup to protect the local threatened species.
