YOU can save the cleanup!


It’s not an accident- the Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC) is likely to release the Santa Susana Field Lab’s Programmatic Environmental Impact Report (PEIR) during the holidays this year, just as many elected officials are transitioning. 

The PEIR will dictate exactly how NASA, Boeing, and the Department of Energy are to perform the cleanup of one of California’s most toxic sites, the SSFL. We anticipate that it will very likely break all the original cleanup agreements, similar to how the DTSC allowed Boeing to write a new cleanup agreement earlier this year that will leave 95% of the contaminated soil on site, permanently. 

If there needs to be a lawsuit over the PEIR, elected officials might only have 30 days after the PEIR is released to file it! We need you to email your elected officials so they’re alert and ready!

The Department of Toxic Substances Control plans to release the Programmatic Environmental Impact Statement by the end of this year. I’m concerned that it won’t uphold the prior cleanup agreements to a “background” cleanup standard.

I am asking that Supervisor (______________) urge the rest of the board to be prepared to move in litigation if needed. Once the PEIR is released, there may only be 30 days for the County to act.

The “background” cleanup is important to protect (pick one or more: my family, my health, the environment, wildlife, etc) from the Santa Susana Field Lab’s dangerous contamination.

I would like to remind (__elected official name__) that this last May, the Los Angeles Supervisors directed the LA County Counsel to work with other affected jurisdictions and nonprofits to explore potential legal action to ensure that the Santa Susana Field Lab’s 2007 and 2010 cleanup agreements are carried out, and that a full cleanup is completed as soon as possible. 

The Board also directed the County’s legislative team to support legislation at the state and federal levels to assure a full “cleanup to background” of the contaminated areas.
